The sea is an important part of Esbjerg's DNA, and with the Maritime Center at Esbjerg Beach, the city's maritime associations have gained a modern gathering place. You are very welcome to visit the Maritime Center, where you can get a glimpse into rowing clubs, diving clubs, sailing sports associations, harbor schools, triathletes, and several other associations. Perhaps you will even be inspired to engage in water activities yourself.
Maritime Center
At Esbjerg Beach, you will find one of Esbjerg's architectural landmarks, the Maritime Center, which brings together the city's many maritime sports under one roof.
Visit the Maritime Center
Although the Maritime Center belongs to the maritime associations, the city's residents, guests, and tourists are very welcome to come and visit the center when it is open. On the ground floor, you will meet the associations at eye level. This is where they store their boats and equipment and have a large shared workshop and sharpening room. If you follow one of the two impressive staircases up to the first floor, you will find the heart of the center. There is a large wooden promenade deck that is open during the daytime. You are welcome to spend time here, and if you're lucky, some of the club rooms along the edge of the center may be open, allowing you to meet some of the enthusiastic members of the associations and learn more about their water sports.
At each end of the first floor, there is a covered terrace with furniture that everyone is welcome to use. Here, you can enjoy the beautiful view of the Wadden Sea.
The maritime associations
The Maritime Center is the gathering place for the maritime associations. On the first floor, each association has its own club room. There are shared changing rooms and a large common area with kitchen facilities that can be used by the center's associations.
The following associations are based in the Maritime Center:
- Esbjerg Roklub
- Esbjerg Søsport
- Dykkerklubben Nemo
- Sportsdykkerklubben Ægir
- Safe Divers Esbjerg
- ETOM (Esbjerg Tri & Multisport)
- Multiatleterne
- Havneskolen
Guest sailors are welcome
While the Maritime Center is closed to regular guests during the night, guest sailors are allowed access around the clock to come inside the facility to warm up, use the kitchenette, take a shower, and do laundry. There is also a designated area where all sailors can dispose of their waste, including from the boat's toilet, in an authorized manner 24/7.
Public toilets
The public toilets in the Maritime Center are located in the "entrance" of the building. There is an entrance next to one of the staircases leading up to the first floor. Just inside the hallway, you will find the toilets on the right.
The toilets are open from 06:00 to 22:00 every day of the week.
Harbor School
In the Maritime Center, Esbjerg Municipality's Harbor School has acquired brand new, modern facilities from which school classes can have unique experiences during the sailing season from May 1st to the autumn break.
In the Maritime Center, the Harbor School has a classroom and a wet lab that can be borrowed by contacting Myrthue, who operates the Harbor School.
Built to withstand the forces of nature
The Maritime Center, with its approximately 2800 m2 and the large oval shape without corners, front or back, will always appear as an iconic, solid, and gleaming lighthouse - regardless of weather and wind. The oval shape clad in wooden strips with caulking is reminiscent of the lower part of a rowboat, paying tribute to Esbjerg's close ties to the sea.
The center is built on two floors, with the lower floor designed to withstand flooding. The Maritime Center was designed by Danish architectural firm Werk Arkitekter in collaboration with the internationally renowned architecture firm Snøhetta and the consulting engineering firm Oluf Jørgensen.
Aqtiv
Aqtiv: The first part of the city's new water experimentarium in the lagoon surrounding the artificial harbor island is being built. Facilities for changing rooms, sauna, preparation and washing area, equipment storage, and lockers are being constructed.
Additionally, a floating bridge is being established. There will be a combined water polo and SUP polo field, a 400-meter open-water course, two triangular courses for swimmers in the lagoon behind the island, and a kayak polo field near the Maritime Center.
